Victorian Momento Mori

Post-Mortem photography
The Victorians had some weird ways to remember their loved ones who have passed away. In the Victorian era taking pictures was a fairly new thing, but to take an image could take up to hours but the subject in the image could not move at all. The Victorians liked to keep something to remember their loved one who have just past away one of those where post-mortem images, they would put them around things they love, or next to family members, or standing on their own help up by a stand. They would even draw the eyes on and even put them in their beautiful outfits and even wedding dresses.

Mourning Jewelry
Another way the Victorians kept a memory of their loved ones was by creating mourning jewelry of the passed loved ones lock of hair in either a locket, broach and rings. This was a for them to keep a part of the passed loved ones close to them.

After doing research  stumbled across this YouTube video on how to create mourning jewelry and it amazes me that even till this date people still make mourning jewelry to remember their loved ones. Some traditions don't die.

Death Masks
Another way the Victorians kept a memorable image of their passed away loved ones or someone very important was by making a death mask. They made a cast of the face of dead person to keep a memoir of them and this is even carried on today. The would usually keep it in their house or office as a decoration piece.

In class we took black and white images of our selves under lighting capturing the way shadow fall on our face. Then we applied make-up on our face imitating the image to creating death masks.

The Image I picked had harsh shadows and I wanted to capture that in my death mask on how the shadow fall on the face. I do admit it is a bit harsh but my idea of capturing my death mask was different then just soft shadows.

With the lovely Sharon and me in my death mask.
