Introduction to the project Gothic Horror

This project is based on the Gothic Horror and the Victorian era. I will be looking at and basing my makeup on the gothic horror theme.

The gothic horror was invented by Horace Walpole with his novel The Castle of Otranto (1764). Gothic horror has different elements that may not always seem pleasant to some people as it can be scary. The elements of gothic horror are such as fear, surrow, darkness, terror, mystery, surprise, largeness, haste and anger.

A typical Gothic novel has the following elements:
Old, abandoned castle, monastery or an abbey
Extreme scenery such as dense foggy forests, rugged mountains, stormy weather etc.
Omens, curses and visions
Male protagonist generally rescing a damsel in distress
Headstrong villain driven by passion and revenge
Young, beautiful women (often a virgin)
Suspense in the form of shadows, labyrinths etc. (text from websit)

What is Goth?
The word Goth originates from a German tribe called Goths. Then the word Gothic came during the medieval times the word was used for buildings and construction with pointed arches and vaults.

What is the difference between Gothic Horror and Horror?
Gothic horror is a combination of romance and horror. In gothic horror you would see haunted houses, vampires, castles and religious aspects. There's an element of supernatural to create the horror but the theme is dark and old historical building structures.
Horror is more gruesome where there is a lot of blood, people with mental disorder hurting or killing breaking bones. Which would make one scream and close their eyes if watching a horror movie.

Gothic horror literature
Gothic horror literature is combination of fiction, romance and horror. They always set in a dark era where the buildings where dark, pointed buildings, gargoyles with mystery, corruption and decay and a love twist added to it such as Great expectations. These kind of books really build the suspense makes you feel nervous and tense.

This image shows the mystery but yet creepy feel that gothic horror gives us it's not all blood and gore but yet it makes all the hairs stand up behind our neck. This image shows that shows horror and romance in the image there is a woman that is most probably in distress or is disturbed by supernatural she's holding red roses which represents romance but yet she's dressed in all black visiting a graveyard which could add to the horror feel. The question about this images is she visiting a loved one or is something supernatural attracting her there this is the kind of questions that Gothic horror puts into your mind when reading books and watching the films there is no blood there is no gore but it's still adds fear in the viewers mind.
